NEW!!!! Purchase my new e-book, "Making Math Marvelous: Using Small Groups and Journals to Expand Mathematical Thinking in Early Childhood" by clicking the button below. Contains: activities for math groups, sample and blank schedules for math groups, guidelines and tips, lesson plan template, directions for teacher made games, over 100 math journal prompts, mini-lessons for math journals, tie in to NCTM standards, etc. The electronic book will be e-mailed to you as a pdf file. Terry, I just spent an hour going over your Math booklet. This is such a practical and comprehensive approach to math and journaling. I have heard a lot about "math prompts" and thought they were all unrealistic and did not have any real objective in mind. I can use every Math Prompt I read in your booklet. The way you have your math centers set up for rotation is awesome! I never thought of that! I also like how you justify everything in your math centers by objectives and the NCTM Standards. I know I will be giving my students meaningful work that is fun also. Thank you so much for compiling all this information at such a reasonable cost, it is more than worth the amount I paid." "I love your book! It is filled with some terrific ideas and I can't wait to use them this year. I already do math journals but you had some great problem starters that I will incorporate during math time. They will make a great connection to the Exemplars we do as an assessment piece for the county. Our math coordinator shared a great phrase to use when doing math journals. She called the illustrations "math pictures" and explained to the children that they were different than journal illustrations because they didn't need all of the details. I used her catch phrase last year and it really helped. "I have had time to go through the Math Journal book (fairly fast) and I wanted to let you know how wonderful it is. I can’t tell you how helpful it is to have some “guidelines” to plan around when you are a new teacher. Everything gets thrown at you so fast that you don’t even know where to start. I read about all the wonderful things everyone is doing and what to do them also, but have so much else to focus on that I can’t even begin to start organizing it all. That is why I love your book- it is already done for me. Again, thank you for taking the time to do this and offer it to people at such a reasonable rate." "What a wonderful resource. I have done many of the activities and the math journals the last few years but you were intuitive enough to clearly explain the process and share all your great ideas. Thanks so much!" "Thank you for such prompt service-my e book was in my e mail minutes after I placed my order. The schedules are helpful and the prompts are relevant. They are well spaced and are in clear bold print. I liked the initial lesson plans provided. I look forward to using this resource in my K-1 class. They are already printing out. "I just scrolled through my e-book and am excited to try out many of the ideas included, particularly the math journals. I am currently a special education teacher trying a co-teaching model for the first time this year with kindergarten and first grade students. I think this will be an excellent resource as I try to differentiate my instruction to meet the learning needs of a variety of students."
Welcome! Mrs. Tunkel's Kindergarten is located at West End School in North Plainfield, NJ! North Plainfield is located in the northeast corner of Somerset County and is bordered by the Watchung Mountains and the Green Brook. Originally a farming community, North Plainfield was settled in the 17th century. Your child must be five years old by October 15 to enter into the North Plainfield Kindergarten program. Our Kindergarten hours are 8:25-2:35. We are located in room 16 of the new wing. We have our own bathroom and water fountain. Students will have gym four times a week and health and music one time per week. They will also have art lessons and visit the library once per week. The students can purchase lunch or take their own lunch. Your child will need a strong folder, binder and backpack for school. Please do not purchase a backpack on wheels as there is not enough room in the cubbies to store them. Calico Cookie Kindergarten is a website resource for Early Childhood teachers and a reference for the parents of children in my class. Thank you for stopping by. Please visit my second web site, Calico Cookie2, for current information about the events in our classroom and important information for parents.
