Long Term Planning
Themes
Note to Teachers:
These are themes I like to cover during the year. The themes are flexible and sometimes overlap months. What I truly find important when planning is to first determine exactly what skills and knowledge I want the children to have. Then I develop the activities to go along with those objectives. Some teachers may fall into the trap of finding a cute song, activitiy,or lesson first. This is top-down planning. It detracts from your effectiveness. You get caught in doing activities that aren't really accomplishing your goals and objectives. This is not to say that cute art activities don't have a place in your lesson planning but you must really consider the time you devote to extraneous activities. For more information see the section below that follows the list of months.

Many classroom activities are geared to be multi-level so that children at all developmental stages may benefit. I use an integrated thematic approach to teach. Each topic tends to lead into the next so students may begin to see connections between subjects. Children learn best when they are actively doing things that connect to something they already know. Math, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science objectives are all covered under an overlying theme. Based on class survey or need some themes may be extended or shortened.
Our curriculum is planned around our reading series, science curriculum and student interests and meets individual, class, school, state, and national educational goals in the most appropriate manner. We use district-adopted reading and mathematics instructional materials including Project Read, DRA2, Guided Reading and Chicago Math.
Parents, if you have special knowledge or experience with any of the topics below, we would love for you to visit our classroom to share your expertise.
The plans below are flexible. Units may be covered at other times of the year depending on student interest.
